| Database Engineer (Troy, MI) Summary We are seeking a Database Engineer with deep expertise in MS SQL Server optimization and a passion for automating data-driven processes. In this role, you will focus on improving database performance, reducing manual operational effort through automation, and partnering with application and analytics teams to ensure efficient, scalable, and reliable data solutions. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys digging into slow queries, designing efficient data access patterns, and building automated workflows that make systems faster, cleaner, and easier to operate. Applicants for this remote role will only be considered if they live in these locations: Metro Detroit (Michigan), Greater Indianapolis (Indiana). Key Responsibilities include but not limited to SQL Optimization & Performance Tuning - Analyze and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and functions to improve performance and scalability
- Identify and remediate performance bottlenecks using execution plans, indexing strategies, and query refactoring
- Design and maintain efficient database schemas, indexes, and constraints
- Partner with application developers to improve data access patterns and query design
- Establish and promote SQL performance best practices across development teams
Process Automation & Efficiency - Design and implement automated database processes to replace manual or error-prone workflows
- Build and maintain automated data pipelines, jobs, and scheduled tasks
- Automate monitoring, alerts, and routine maintenance activities where appropriate
- Develop scripts and tools to streamline deployments, data validation, and operational reporting
- Implement processes to meet corporate data policies and reduce system costs
- Continuously identify opportunities to reduce operational overhead through automation
Data Quality & Reliability - Ensure data integrity, consistency, and accuracy across systems
- Implement validation, reconciliation, and exception-handling mechanisms
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for data-related issues
- Maintain and support database continuity solutions including monitoring, backup, restoration, and other activities, as necessary, to ensure high service levels
Collaboration & Documentation - Work closely with application developers and operations teams
- Participate in design and code reviews with a focus on performance, scalability, and maintainability
- Document database designs, optimization approaches, and automated processes
- Mentor team members on SQL Server performance and automation techniques
Required Qualifications - 5+ years working as a Database Engineer specializing in Performance Tuning & Optimization Disciplines
- Strong experience as a SQL Server Database Developer using T-SQL
- Advanced SQL skills with demonstrated experience optimizing complex queries
- Experience with stored procedures, views, and database performance tuning
- Hands-on experience automating databases or data-related processes
- Solid understanding of relational database design principles
- Experience troubleshooting performance issues in production environments
- Experience working in multi-tenant environments
- Experience working with SQL Server in both on-premises and cloud environments
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job
