Benefit Specialist (Maryland Heights, MO)
Summary – Determines, maintains, and terminates member and/or dependent eligibility or health care benefits. Responds to incoming telephone calls from members, dependents, and providers regarding benefits provided by the Plan. Review eligibility and claims data to ensure accuracy of processing in accordance with Plan provisions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to
  • Be the first point of contact for member questions/issues
  • Know the plan as outlined in the Summary Plan Description (SPD)
  • Professionally and accurately respond to incoming calls from members to include:
    • explaining group benefits
    • confirm eligibility status
    • assisting the callers with their questions or concerns and providing problem resolution
    • mail, email or fax commonly requested forms and letters to members as needed
  • Be able to review and understand the meaning of any mailings sent as well as explain them to members and employers
  • Assist with additional client related work as needed and assigned by manager/supervisor
  • Expected to handle each call and member walk-in professionally and to the best of his/her ability
  • Must have compassion and patience for all members that need extra assistance
  • Be confident handling difficult situations
  • Must have superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be flexible and willing to pitch in and work together as a team member
  • Should have general knowledge of Word and Excel
  • This position will require training and continued communication with the Plan Management and Contributions Supervisor for guidance and direction
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job
Education and/or Experience – Post High School education or prior related work experience.
Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret; the plan rules as outlined in the SPD’s, user manuals for on-line services, department rules and procedures manual and COBRA Compliance manual. Communicate well with Plan Management and higher level.
Mathematical Skills- Ability to apply concepts of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Reasoning Ability - Specialist must be analytical. Specialist must be able to deal with people in stressful situations. Superior communication skills and keen observation is essential. Knowledge of healthcare benefits and application and attention to detail. Creative ability to continually improve processes, transmission of information and apply good communication skills both verbally and visually to translate information with ease of understanding for both our members, clients and vendors.
Physical Demands – Extended computer time, deciphering healthcare information and extracting information for both internal/external use.
Work Environment - Fast paced department. Work independently as well as in a team, must be able to multi-task and be detail oriented.
Work Schedule - Full-time. Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm. Required in office (no at-home days).

Pay - The hourly rate for this position is $21.00. Actual salary is dependent on skills, experience, education, and other business factors.
